  3. LOCALITY: North America (Alberta)
  4. SIZE: 26 ft/8 m long

  6. This "small" tyrannosaur shows all the
  7. features common to the family. It was
  8. massively built, with a big head and short
  9. body, balanced at the hips by a long, strong
  10. tail. Pillarlike legs, with 3-toed, spreading
  11. feet, supported the great body weight.
  12. Albertosaurus and other members of its
  13. family were specialized theropods. Their arms
  14. were puny in comparison to the body size.
  15. They were so short that they could not have
  16. reached up to the mouth. There were only 2
  17. fingers on each hand, which would not have
  18. been very effective for grasping prey. And
  19. although the jaws could be opened wide, the
  20. bones of the skull were rigidly fixed,
  21. without the same degree of flexibility as
  22. between those in the skulls of the
  23. allosaurs.Tyrannosaurs had a well-developed
  24. second set of ribs on the underside of the
  25. body. A possible explanation for these extra
  26. ribs and the short arms could be that when a
  27. tyrannosaur rested, it lay on its belly. The
  28. innards would have been supported by the
  29. extra ribs, and not crushed by the great
  30. weight of the body. When the animal got up,
  31. its tiny arms stopped the bulky frame from
  32. sliding forward, and steadied it as it rose
  33. to its feet.There is also a suggestion that
  34. the tiny arms were used by the males to hold
  35. onto the females while mating.
